Tovina had her 8 week check up on Friday. This healthy (not as) little thing now weighs 12 lbs 7 oz! Up from 8 lbs 7 oz just 4 weeks ago. And you can see one of the many dimples in her elbow to prove it.
She is also a little longer than 23 inches.

Biting the Hand that Doesn't Feed You
Tovina was enjoying some cuddly time with her father when she suddenly became ravenously hungry, as she is wont to do. While I was scrambling to feed the poor starving thing, she took matters into her own hand, or at least arm, and started sucking on her wrist. We are usually content to let her use this method of self pacification, so we were completely unprepared for the results this time...
Yup. She gave herself a hickey.

Passport Photo
We need a photo for Tovina's passport. How hard can it be? Just need a straight on shot of the her face with her eyes open and a neutral expression.

Back at the Ranch
And just what is going on back at the apartment while I at class?
Daddy and baby are working hard too!
Though we should probably review Tovina's posture is for proper ergonomics positioning.

L'shanah Tovina
The Jewish new year has come to us again and we would like to take this moment to wish everyone a good year - L'shana tova!
A week ago, on Rosh Hashana, we named Tovina during services. It was a very special event to share with our Jewish community here in China. With much effort, Michael and I managed to stay dry-eyed. We were told afterwards that we were the only ones.

Already?
My next MBA class started today. This means that Michael is home alone with our attention-demanding little one. Hopefully there is enough expressed milk in the fridge to prevent her from starving.
As a side note, Tovina decided to change her opinion concerning bottle feeding about 2 weeks ago. When she was 2 weeks old, she took the Advent bottle with no problem and she took it right out of the fridge. Then, 2 weeks ago Tovina started fighting that bottle and made it sound like we were torturing her when we put the cold liquid in her mouth. She also spit it right out of course.

Hoping for the best, we went and bought a few other bottle types and crossed our fingers. Luckily that 1-month-old, who apparently thought she was allowed to have her own opinions, liked the Nuk! She does still want it warmed up though.
I bet that when she is older she is going to want her food cooked too. Sheesh!

30 (plus) days
In Chinese culture, a new baby and mother are absolutely, upon pain of public humiliation, under no circumstance to deviate, allowed to leave their house for 30 days after the baby is born. This means that if you have not had a baby yourself, then it is possible for you to have never seen a newborn.
When we took Tovina out during her first week of life and Chinese people saw us, they were quite startled and one 23 year old was so nervous about having such a young baby out of the house that she didn't even want to come closer. Shocking as it may be, there are still plenty of Chinese who are thrilled to see a baby and give us great smiles.
Even last week when we went shopping, one Chinese grandmother came over to us and was incensed that not only was Tovina too small to be outside, I shouldn't be out either. And to top the whole thing off, what were we thinking having Michael carry the baby instead of me, her mother? Michael didn't mind being taken to task too much though since, even though he was carrying Tovina, this nice grandmother yelled at me.

Surprise!
Some times, one simply has to be amazed that an infant can process enough liquid to overwhelm a diaper, soak a onesie, and threaten to drown the two poor teddy bears Cara appears to have impaled with her feet.
And as impressive as that is, just check out the hickey Tovina left on Cara's shoulder as we got the little pee meister washed up! It turns out that although she was content enough soiling herself, the offense of diluting it down with warm water and a little baby soap was simply more than Tovina could take. Poor kid! All that hard work down the drain. We have confidence that she'll figure out a way to trump this performance, though.
