Bye bye for now

Once again we have made it back home to Ohio. We had a really lovely time in Winnipeg - lots of time with family, met cousins we had not seen before, and Tovina started really getting to know some of the people she will be visiting for the rest of her life.

There are LOTS more photos to come, but for now, here is Tovina with:
Jayden - only 6 months old

Hannah and one of the polar bear sculptures at the zoo

Giving a goodbye hug to Matthew

Sharing some love with Mika (who is a wonderful dance partner according to T)

Baba!

Tovina was suitably happy with the results of waiting.
Baba was seen and hugged and kissed and there was much rejoicing.
Many relatives seen, dimples were flashed, some hugs were distributed, and sleep is now being enjoyed by most of us.
In fact, I think I will go and enjoy some of that myself now.

Oh Can-a-daaaa

We are all packed up and ready to leave the house at oh-bright-600 tomorrow. Posts will likely get light while we are visiting with family but maybe you - our faithful readers - will get lucky and I'll keep posting (could happen).

Tovina was happy to go into her crib tonight because she has translated 'after you go to sleep and then get up in the morning, we are going to drive in the car and then fly in a plane and then fly in another plane and then we'll see Baba!'
to
lay down in bed and close your eyes. When you open them we will get in the car and then.. and then.. and then.. see Baba!
So there I was so proud of her because she went right into bed and laid down so nicely but as soon as I closed the doors she started calling for me.
'MOMMY!'
Opened the door, 'What is it T?'
'Drive car? See Baba!'

She was much less entranced by the whole 'its time to go to sleep now' thing when she realized we weren't going along with her interpretation.

Golden children in Florida

One of my goals for a while now has been to try to get Tovina to enjoy pools. We have been make slow but steady progress. While in Florida huge steps were taken in the backyard of some friends.
Here are 3 munchkins sliding, splashing, swimming (yes, apparently that was possible in 6" of water), and generally enjoying themselves.
.
Tovina was queen of the slide!

Getting ready for some quiet time after an exhausting day of carousing. On the couch are Tovina (wearing Austin's pajamas), Austin (of said pajamas) and Abby.

And here are the 3 wee ones all tucked in - they were preparing for some snugly TV watching.

Winnipeg

Florida was great and all, but having been back in the US for almost a month, I just couldn't stand it.
Well, actually, there was a rather sudden family event that drew Tovina and me up to Canada. Its nice to see family but we will deeply miss our cousin Ari.

Katherine and Tovina

Made it home but pretty darn tired. In place of words, here are some shots of Tovina and her new friend Katherine. (Katherine is just 2 months older)
Katherine is the only person I know who wanted to puch more than T wanted to swing. Amazing endurance!
And here are the 2 princesses all dressed up!

And back again

We're back in Atlanta and prepping to be in Ohio tomorrow. It was wonderful seeing family and friends but it really showed us that we need to get down to Melbourne more often. I guess once every 4 years is just not enough.

Half way there

We made it to Mari's last night and are getting ready to move on to Florida. Very nice having a stop over point almost exactly half way.
Tovina remembered Mari which made aunt Mari pretty darn happy.
As well as visiting Mari, I also was able to visit my old Mazda Miata and even made a bagel run this morning with the top down... ahhhh. For a moment I even tried to work out how to take the 2-seater convertible rather than the mini-van for the rest of the trip. (In case you are wondering, the math did not in fact work out.)

Back home

We have an absolutely fantastic time in Turkey and are now back in Ohio. Michael has posted more photos from the trip with captions. If you haven't checked it out, I recommend his work.
In other news, we are still unpacking, doing laundry, getting readjusted to EST, and generally enjoying being home and eating s'mores.
Tovina is showing off her 3 syllable words (Tovina, banana, escalator) and is almost back on her regular sleep cycle. If we can just cut out the 4am wake up we'll be perfect.
I expect regular blogging to resume from here until the next trip.

lots and lots of photos

Michael has been uploading photos on Facebook with captions and everything. It is now available for anybody to see even if you are not a Facebook user. So check out this link and see what we are doing everyday!

If you click on a specific photo you will see Michael's comments specific to that image.

Exploring Cappadocia - Day 1

Here's the family at Devrent's valley. These wacky rock formations happen when you fill a valley with volcanic ash, toss some chunks of volcanic basalt on top, then let a million years of rain erode the volcanic ash around the basalt chunks, leaving them suspended at the tops of scrawny tufa (calcite) towers.

After hiking around the first stop and teaching Tovina 'camel' we headed over to

Our second stop was at Göreme. Greek Christians carved over a dozen churches out of the tufa cliffs in Göreme. They then plastered the insides of many of them and painted some elaborate imagery in a story-telling format. The artwork is about 800 years old.

T spends a great deal of her time in the backpack as we hike around. But she also likes to get down and hike her own little self up and down. This has resulted in some more lessons about roads, drop offs, and new scrapes on her arms and legs. It has also given her time to pick up some new habits. Here she is learning from Daddy.

In Turkey!

We made it and met up with my side of the family and just spent an exhausting day checking out some of Istanbul's highlights. Michael has posted them to his facebook page. I'm not sure if it will work, but you can try seeing them here.
Below are a couple of highlights
This is the one of the views from our hotel window. Michael took this at dawn - which we were awake to see because of a certain small member of our traveling party. When she heard the call to prayer from the mosque Tovina started singing 'Old McDonald had a farm.' Why? apparently the prayer song reminded her of eee-i-eee-i-ooh.

Here is our group in front of the blue mosque somewhat later in the day.

And here is T wearing some styling sunglasses that aunt Mari picked up for her. Ready to go!

And we're off!

Heading to Turkey for a couple of weeks. Doubt there will be much of a chance to post while we are gone. Will be back the first week of June.
Enjoy your extra free time while we're gone!

STOP does not mean GO

In order to enjoy the blustery cold weather in St Louis, we decided to go for 30+ minute walk around the Loop on the way to lunch at what we heard was a fantastic Ethiopian restaurant.
Unfortunately the restaurant was no longer there.
Luckily there was a sign on the sidewalk that listed all the restaurants that were still open in the area.
So, while Michael read the sign, Tovina and I, at Tovina's very speedy (re: not speedy) pace, walked on ahead. Unbeknown to me, T and I came upon a parking lot that used part of the sidewalk as a driveway. I only realized it when a car gave a bit of a beep to warn us they were planning on turning. Realizing that I not only did not have a hold of Tovina, but that she was even a couple of steps in front of me - almost in front of the car - I yelled, "STOP!"

Tovina giggled and ran... in front of the car. By no stretch of the imagination would I consider that stopping.
The drive was luckily paying a lot of attention and had stopped her car.

I caught the little miscreant, thankfully waved at the car, and gave a huge relieved sigh. I also realized that, rather than being deliberately rebellious, Tovina had no idea what "stop" meant. She seemed to think it was some cool new game which likely involved "catch" one of her other favorite games these days that also uses a lot of yelling and giggling.

hmmm.....
Since I was not willing to carry her for the next 20 minutes, to say nothing of the fact that she wasn't about to let me, how exactly does one teach a child to "stop" in less than 2 minutes?
We could just use "no" which tends to make her stop whatever she is doing, but it can have some unfortunate side effects.

Instead we followed her lead and turned it into a slightly more focused game. See, Tovina recently learned about "run" and is a big fan. So together, heading down the sidewalk much to the amusement of passersby, we ran ran ran ran ran and Stopped! and giggled. And then we ran ran ran ran ran ran and Stopped! and giggled.
We didn't test her new found skill at intersections, but we did keep practising over the weekend and have played the "run and stop" game a few times since getting home. We think that whole "stop" will have a much better chance of working now.

Home again , home again

We had a great time in St. Louis, heard some incredible singing, and made a bunch of new friends.
There are many stories to tell including the peep show we took Tovina to, the camera that I set free, dancing in windows, and the Maslenitsa party that T and I crashed. But those stories will have to wait cause I'm tired and I have a 7:45am meeting tomorrow.

Road trip

We are getting ready to head to Saint Louis for Splash of Color. Given what usually happens when we travel, there will likely be a break in blogging. But with any luck we will get some great footage of Tovina joining in the singing with her own special harmonization.

The danger with cribs

At home Tovina sleeps in a pack-n-play with soft mesh sides. At my parent's house she sleeps in a real, honest-to-goodness wooden crib. (Actually, she sleeps in my honest-to-goodness 30+ year old crib. We believe in very serious recycling in my house.) But I have noticed something sort of uncomfortable looking about how T sleeps in the afore mentioned crib. Can you pick out what I mean?

No?

Well, let me give you a close up.

Did you catch it that time?

It doesn't seem to bother her...

And the big red mark in the middle of her forehead did fade within a day so no harm done.

Heading to PA

Tovina and I planning to drive over to PA this weekend. This wasn't meant to be a surprise but it was sort of last minute and I seemed to have forgotten to tell people.
So I'm telling you now.

Just wanted to make sure that Baba and Zaida and all the assorted PA folks are getting the recommended monthly Tovina allowance.

Straw education

While in Winnipeg Tovina learned how to use a straw. Or at least she learned how to blow bubbles. Here is a video of Tovina ttrying to get a drink from Mari's glass.

Highlights to look for in the video
1) Tovina's baby bird impression (which is also shown in this picture)
2) Tovina's donation to Mari's drink at the very end of the video clip
And here is a lovely shot of a very serious Mari and Tovina and a very smug Pam. Pam had reason to be smug.. after all, it wasn't her glass that Tovina is blowing into.

Just a few more miles

Having now seen our new home, Tovina and I decided it was time to leave the country again and head to Canada.
